Occasional anxiety is a normal part of life and is often situational (e.g. job interviews, presentations, new experiences). However, when anxiety involving everyday situations impacts one's ability to function, that is when it becomes problematic. Some symptoms of anxiety disorders include:
- Restlessness/nervousness
- Rapid heartrate
- Sleep disturbances
- Rapid breathing/hyperventilating
- Feelings of dread/impending doom
- Digestive issues
When anxiety and fear intensifies within minutes, panic attacks can occur. Symptoms of panic attacks include, but are not limited to:
- Heart palpitations
- Difficulty breathing
- Chest pain/tightness
- Sweating
- Shaking/trembling
- Fear of dying
- Dizziness
Just like anxiety, experiencing sadness is a part of life. However, if periods of sadness are significant in length and cause feelings of hopelessness, helplessness or unworthiness, this may be an indicator of depression. In addition, when the above feelings negatively impact one's ability to function and complete everyday tasks, treatment may be necessary.
Other symptoms of depression can include:
- Fatigue
- Sleep disturbances (not sleeping enough, sleeping too much)
- Persistent sadness
- Irritability
- Aches, pains, headaches
- Suicidal thoughts
- Self-harming behaviour
- Digestive issues
- Appetite loss or increase
- Difficulty concentrating
- Loss of motivation
- Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
